The poor in spirit are those who understand their spiritual bankruptcy and their desperate need before a sovereign God. This transformation of a life via God’s Spirit begins with a demolition of self-sufficiency and self-righteousness (not to be confused with self-worth). This is initiation into kingdom living. The pilgrimage continues as we mourn over our sin which has both caused and revealed a deep sense of loss and separation. The grief of a broken heart and a troubled mind produces godly sorrow. This state of reflective repentance becomes a consistent reality over a lifetime. The consequence of this contrition is consolation that draws us toward our kingdom destiny. There is a real sense of strength and encouragement which comes from our God, the only true source of comfort.
