Disciples spend their lives apprenticed to their master, Jesus Christ. They learn information about God and develop skills in faith. They are people who spend their lives going toward God knowing that the pathway for getting there is “the Way,” Jesus Himself.
Friedrich Nietzsche stated, “The essential thing in heaven and earth is that there should be a long obedience in the same direction; there thereby results, and has always resulted in the long run, something which has made life worth living.”
It is this “long obedience” which our world does much to diminish and discourage. There are some practical considerations for resisting the stream of the world’s ways and for recognizing the way of our master so as to embrace the good news of His kingdom:
- Begin with the mind-set that God is sovereign. This is our strong hope. (Psalm 33:11)
- Stand still to let the Holy Spirit of God speak to your mind and heart as to your place and participation in the grand Creation-Covenant narrative. (Psalm 46:10)
- Search and study the Scriptures humbly and aggressively. They are true and they are alive! (Acts 17:11)
- Seek and surround yourselves with other disciples. Watch how a fierce devotion emerges out of obedience and worship! (Acts 2:42-47)
- Acclimate to the “heaven and earth-God’s will be done” continuum of prayer. (I Thessalonians 5:16-19)
- Work out and confirm your own God-given salvation through humility and obedience. (Philippians 2:12-13)
- Live with the awareness and the assurance that you have an incredible and secure future! (Ephesians 1:18-21)
