The letter to the Hebrews is a sustained argument about the absolute pre-eminence of the Son of God. Jesus Christ is the Captain of our Salvation, the Apostle and Great High Priest of our Profession, and He is the Author and Finisher of our Faith. Throughout the letter we find words of warning and encouragement relating to our response to what God has revealed to us in His Word and in His Son. There is also an understanding of what it means to live by a faith, which requires that sobriety and urgency are consistent with profession.
Hebrews states the well- known question, “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” This can be applied to the horror of missing eternal life altogether. But it is more accurately interpreted as the failure to appropriate the salvation that is already possessed.
- We must pay careful attention to our salvation, set our hearts and minds on Jesus, and hold firmly to what we possess.
- We should train ourselves in discernment and endure hardship and discipline as we persevere in the will of God.
- We ought to strengthen our hearts with grace, offer the sacrifices of praise, and hold on to our hope to the very end.
