“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us so that through endurance and encouragement we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4) The sixteen writing prophets, which are the most severely neglected genre of the Scriptures, labored to get people who were beaten down to open themselves up to the hope of God’s future and to God’s work of salvation. The prophets made it impossible to evade God as they insisted that we see God for who He is, not for what we imagine Him to be.
These prophets, rejected then as they are now, seemed to be intimately aware of the person and ways of God. They were in on the deep things, the inside counsel, the “secrets” of God. (Amos 3:7)
Using their collective and representative words, we will share some of these “secrets” as they apply to sovereignty, revelation, the incarnation, salvation, our commission, preservation, and how all will be consummated in the commencement of a new age.
In this post we see what the prophets said about the sovereignty of God and about how he reveals Himself to us.
- Sovereignty- The Lord is in His holy temple, let all the earth be silent before Him…. His glorious throne, exalted from the beginning, has been our place of sanctuary…. He is thrice holy, the Almighty, and the whole earth is full of His glory…. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so His ways and thoughts are beyond ours…. His purposes will stand…. He will not change….
- Revelation- The Lord reveals the deep and the hidden things; He knows what lies in the darkness, and light dwells with Him…. He is the Maker of the entire cosmos…. When His word proceeds from His mouth it accomplishes what He desires, and it achieves the purpose for which He sent it…. He is present with us in the Son and powerful in us by His Spirit…. His glory will be revealed and all humanity shall see it.
Next time we shall look into the secrets of the prophets concerning the Incarnation and Salvation.
